The ‘real tension’ between Melania and Ivanka Trump started at 1 critical point
Melania Trump and Ivanka Trump have reportedly been at odds for years, with insiders claiming the first lady excluded her stepdaughter from her recent documentary
The Trump family came together at President Donald Trump’s nearly two-hour State of the Union address on Tuesday night, reigniting discussions about the strained relationship between first lady Melania Trump and the president’s eldest daughter Ivanka Trump.
The president’s two prominent women were seated in close proximity during his speech, with Barron Trump – Trump’s youngest son and only child with Melania – positioned between them. Melania and Ivanka have reportedly been at odds for years, with tensions peaking during Trump’s first administration.
Throughout Trump’s initial term, he depended heavily on Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, who served as his White House senior advisors. The couple chose to withdraw from politics during Trump’s second term, pointing to family obligations.
Despite expectations that the friction between Ivanka and Melania might have eased with the president’s eldest daughter’s departure during his second term, sources suggest their relationship remains frosty.
In a recent development, Melania’s highly anticipated self-titled documentary contained no mention of the first lady’s stepdaughter, which observers interpret as telling about their current dynamic.
Sources have highlighted the “complete absence” of Ivanka from Melania’s documentary on Rob Shuter’s Substack.

“Melania and Ivanka do not get along – not at all,” the source claimed. “There’s real tension, and Melania made it clear she didn’t want Ivanka anywhere near this film.”
Another source revealed: “There’s zero love lost. Ivanka’s absence is intentional. This is Melania’s world, and she wanted it that way.”
An insider who attended an early screening of the documentary shared with Shuter: “It’s her story, her rules. Barron is protected, Ivanka is gone, and the spotlight never leaves Melania.”
What sparked the tension between Melania and Ivanka?
During Trump’s initial term in office, their strained relationship hit a critical point when Ivanka effectively assumed the role of first lady at the White House whilst Melania remained in New York City until Barron’s school year concluded.
“Melania lived in New York. She didn’t appear in public or release statements to the press. Her social media was quiet,” Stephanie Winston Wolkoff revealed in her 2020 memoir, Melania and Me: The Rise and Fall of My Friendship with the First Lady. “Ivanka rushed in to fill the void as ‘acting’ First Lady, issuing constant social media posts and press releases galore about her involvement with women’s issues, lobbying Daddy about climate change (alas, unsuccessfully), and attending every meeting she could slink her way into.”
Katie Rogers, who penned American Woman: The Transformation of the Modern First Lady, from Hillary Clinton to Jill Biden, documented that Melania privately dubbed Ivanka “The Princess.”
Rogers also alleged that the two were “locked in a quiet competition for press coverage.”
These speculations intensified when only Tiffany Trump and her husband, Michael Boulos, were present at the state dinner with the royal family in September. Ivanka’s notable absence prompted many to look back at the initial state visit to the U.K. with the queen in 2019.
A NewsNation source suggested that Melania felt “overshadowed” by Ivanka during that previous trip. “That wasn’t going to happen again. Melania is much more in power and control than she was in the first presidency and didn’t want Ivanka coming to this meeting,” the insider revealed.
After the State of the Union, social media commenters drew comparisons between Ivanka’s shimmering Oscar de la Renta outfit and the divisive metallic pants Melania had worn to the Governors Dinner just days earlier. In general, neither of their fashion choices resonated positively with online audiences.
